The Truth About Freckles.
Freckles: some people love them, others want to get rid of them. Either way, they’re often misunderstood. The truth is, you’re not actually born with freckles (surprising, right?). Freckles are technically a form of sun damage, caused by repeated exposure to UV light. While they’re not harmful in most cases, they’re a clear signal that your skin’s been working overtime to protect itself from the sun.
At CTMS, I'm all about empowering you with the knowledge and tools to take care of your skin. Whether you want to embrace your freckles, prevent new ones, or reduce their appearance, we’ve got treatments and products to help you along the way.
So, What Are Freckles Really?
Freckles are small, pigmented spots that show up on areas exposed to the sun, like your face, shoulders, and arms. They’re caused by melanocytes (the cells in your skin that produce pigment). When your skin is exposed to UV rays, those melanocytes go into overdrive, creating little clusters of pigment that we see as freckles.
Here’s the thing: even if freckles run in your family, you weren’t born with them. They develop over time from sun exposure. Think of freckles as your skin waving a red (well, maybe brown) flag, saying, “Hey! I’ve had a bit too much sun!”
Freckles and Sun Damage
Now, just because freckles are a sign of sun damage doesn’t mean they’re dangerous. They’re usually harmless, but prolonged UV exposure that leads to freckles can also cause more serious issues, like premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and even skin cancer.
The good news? Sun damage can be prevented—and even treated!
Freckle Prevention: Your Skin’s First Defense
When it comes to freckles, prevention is everything. By protecting your skin from UV exposure, you can stop new freckles from forming (and keep your skin healthy overall!).
Here are a few simple tips that make a big difference:
Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. (Did I say sunscreen?) Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily—yes, even when it’s cloudy. Check out these.
Reapply. Sunscreen isn’t a one-and-done thing. Reapply every two hours when you’re outdoors.
Stay in the shade. Especially during peak sun hours (10 AM to 4 PM).
Cover up. Hats, sunglasses, and UV-blocking clothing are lifesavers—literally.
By sticking to these habits, you’re not just preventing freckles—you’re protecting your skin’s long-term health.
What If You Already Have Freckles?
If you love your freckles, rock them with pride! But if you’re ready to minimize their appearance or even out your skin tone, we’ve got options to help you.
Microneedling: The Skin Game-Changer
Microneedling is one of my favorite treatments for addressing freckles and overall skin rejuvenation. It involves using tiny, controlled needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, which kickstarts your body’s natural healing process. Here’s what it can do:
Break up pigmentation clusters (bye-bye, freckles and sunspots).
Boost collagen and elastin production, making your skin smoother and firmer.
Improve overall skin tone and texture.
Microneedling is minimally invasive, super effective, and delivers results you can see and feel.
Medical-Grade Skincare with SkinMedica
Treatments like microneedling are amazing, but maintaining your results at home is key—and that’s where SkinMedica comes in. These products are next-level when it comes to improving pigmentation, repairing sun damage, and protecting your skin.
Some of my personal faves:
TNS Advanced+ Serum: Repairs damaged skin and boosts collagen (because who doesn’t love a little extra glow?).
Total Defense + Repair Sunscreen: A multitasking sunscreen that protects and repairs your skin at the same time.
Even & Correct Advanced Brightening Treatment: A powerful daily serum to help target and prevent visible hyperpigmentation.
With the right combination of professional treatments and at-home care, we can help you achieve the clear, glowing skin you deserve.
